Your Metal Roof in the Winter
A Metal Roof is Simply Better
Here in Montana we have very extreme seasons. During the summer our temperatures can top out at 100 degrees. In the winter we can hit 20 below (or sometimes even colder). Fortunately, having the right roof on your home can help to mitigate the effects of the cold. Here at Beartooth Metal Roofing, we believe that a metal roof is the best way to withstand the elements.

The Perks of a Metal Roof
Metal certainly does cost more than an asphalt shingle roof. But because these roofs last so much longer than shingle, they pay for themselves over the years. There is also the added benefit of superior protection. Benefits of a metal roof include:
Better Snow and Ice Protection – As the snow falls, it’s going to pile up on your roof no matter what your roof is made out of. The superior protection comes when some of that snow starts to melt. If you have a shingled roof, and your insulation isn’t enough to keep all of the warm air inside the house, the snow will start to melt where it touches the roof. As it drains to the eaves, it will freeze when the warm air is no longer underneath it. This thaw and freeze can cause ice dams which can cause significant damage to your home.
A metal roof doesn’t have shingles where the water can back up underneath. If ice dams are a problem, we can even install heating coils along the eaves so that the water doesn’t re-freeze and instead drains off the roof.
Don’t forget the snow breaks either! If you live in an area that gets a lot of snow, you will want snow breaks to prevent mini-avalanches from sliding off the roof.
Better Insulation – Of course, you shouldn’t have as much of a problem with melting snow with a metal roof. That’s for two main reasons.
First, a metal roof is made of solid metal panels. These panels don’t let air escape through little gaps and cracks (often a shingle roof will). One solid piece of material is always going to seal better than many overlapping pieces.
Second, if you have an older house, we can add insulation to your roof. By placing Styrofoam on top of the roof deck, and then encasing that with plywood, we add more R-Value to your roof. The result is a roof that doesn’t melt the snow up top.
Less Maintenance – The gravel on an asphalt roof will eventually break off. Even with normal weather conditions. In some cases you may have a shingle or two that go flying in high winds. Metal doesn’t see any of these problems.
Over the years, you will have to do essentially nothing with your metal roof to make sure it continues to protect your roof.
Better Looking – We have said it before, and we will continue to say it. Our roofs simply look better. By bending over the edges, we create a roof that has no screws showing. The result is a work of art on top of your house; one that will dramatically increase your home’s value while offering superior protection.
