Why Do People Choose Metal Roofs?
Metal Roofs are the Best Roofs
Most roofs across the US are topped with shingles. The simple reason is that a shingled roof is quite a bit cheaper to install than a metal roof; at least when you look at the cost just once. The truth is that when you have a metal roof on top of your house for 20, 30, or more years, the costs of putting metal are significantly less than putting on shingles. There are a few other perks as well.
A recent survey took a look at why people choose to put a metal roof on top of their home. While this survey wasn’t in Billings, the concepts still apply to those who live in Yellowstone County, or other areas nearby.
It turns out that 77% of the people who choose metal over a different material choose it for one of the following reasons: Longevity, Strength & Protection, Good Investment, and Attractive Appearance.
Metal Roofs Simply Last Longer
Here in Billings, MT we get a lot of hail storms. If you put asphalt shingles on your home, the next year you could end up ripping them all off and putting new ones on. Those storms are terrible, and they lay waste to a lot of roofs throughout the area.
You can get around that with a metal roof from Beartooth Metal Roofing. Because the metal is so much tougher than shingles, it can withstand the impact of the hail a whole lot better. And even if you don’t get a hail storm, metal as a whole lasts 2 or 3 times as long. One metal roof, without any outside damage, will last longer than at least 2 shingle roofs.
Metal Roofs are Strong and Protective
As mentioned before, the metal roof will hold up a lot better to hail than a traditional asphalt shingle roof. But what if you live in an area that doesn’t get a lot of hail? It’s still a good idea to use metal.
For example, we love to do work in Nye, Absarokee, Red Lodge, and other mountain towns throughout Montana. These areas get quite a bit of rain, and quite a bit of snow. Metal roofs stand up to the elements much better than shingles. They are less likely to leak when the snow piles high (and the ice forms on the roof). They slough the snow off instead of letting it pile up on top of the house. And they help trap the heat inside the house better (due to fewer gaps) which provides superior insulation.
Metal Roofs are a Good Investment
Since metal is so much tougher and lasts so long, it’s a good investment. And not just because it lasts longer either. There are a variety of factors that go into a metal roof that make it worth more than a shingle roof.
A metal roof can lower your insurance premiums. Because it lasts longer and is hail resistant, you may experience lower premiums. Your metal roof is more efficient. Rather than soak up the sun’s rays, it reflects them to help keep your home cooler. All of these things help to raise the value of your home, and ultimately make the metal roof a good investment.
Metal Roofs are Attractive
A newly shingled roof looks nice, but after a year or two that look will fade. New metal roofs look nice, and after a decade or two they still look nice. The beauty of a metal roof lasts for many decades and will look as good as the day it was installed.
That beauty does a lot. It makes your home easier to sell when the time comes. It makes your home easier to look at while you live there. It also makes your home worth more because people want to live in a house that has character, charm, and is attractive.
